A kangaroo word is a word that contains, in strict sequential order without rearranging, all the letters of a shorter word (called the "joey") that shares a synonymous or related meaning.
The concept was invented by Ben O'Dell in an article for The Reader's Digest in the 1950s. The parent word is dubbed the kangaroo, and the nested synonym is called the "joey" after young marsupials carried inside the mother's pouch. A word that carries two separate joey synonyms is termed a "grand kangaroo" (such as "feasted" containing both "ate" and "fed"). When the nested letters spell an antonym rather than a synonym, it is known as an anti-kangaroo word.
